Universidade Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona

Carme Oriol was born in Amposta (Catalonia, Spain) in 1955, and is a lecturer in the Departament de Filologia Catalana at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona) and teaches Ethnopoetry and Folklore in the Facultat de Lletres at the university. Her undergraduate dissertation was on the Rondallística (Folktales) of Joan Amades and her doctoral thesis in Catalan Studies was about traditional Catalan carols. She has participated in several research projects: The Folklore of Andorra (1993-95); the URV’s Folklore Archive (1994-97); the Catalan Folktale Catalogue (2000-2002, 2005-2008); Oral Stories from the Tarragona Region (2002-03); Bio-bibliographic Collection of Popular Catalan Literature (2006-09); the Catalan Oral Literature of the Baix Aragó-Casp district (2007-08). She has published the books El cançoner nadalenc català al Principat de Catalunya (1853-1951) (1995), Estudi del folklore andorrà en el seu context (1997), Introducció a l’Etnopoètica. Teoria i formes del folklore en la cultura catalana (2002), El patrimoni oral a les comarques de Tarragona (2005) and articles in specialist journals and encyclopedias (Fabula, Estudos de Literatura Oral, Cahiers de Littérature Orale, Revista de Investigaciones Folklóricas, Revista d’Etnologia de Catalunya, Enzyklopädie des Märchens, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of World Folklore and Folklife, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales, Tradicionari). Jointly with Josep M. Pujol, she has published the books Índex tipològic de la rondalla catalana (2003) and Index of Catalan Folktales (2008) and she is directing the Arxiu de Folklore del Departament de Filologia Catalana de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili. She is a member of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research, the North American Catalan Society, the Associació Internacional de Llengua i Literatura Catalanes, the Grup de Recerca Identitats en la Literatura Catalana, the Grup d’Estudis Etnopoètics, the European Research Group on Oral Narrative, and the American Folklore Society’s Mediterranean Section.
